Q: I am coming to Birmingham soon, how do I get to UAB?

A: Please contact our unit president under the “contact us” link. If for any reason we cannot pick you up from the airport here is some information about ground transportation from Birmingham airport.

 

Q: I am looking for a convenient housing location for myself, where do you recommend me to go?

A: You can apply for temporary residency at the UAB International house. This will give you some time to check the available housing options in the area.

     You can also live on-campus if you are single; please log on  On-Campus residency to reserve or check availability.

     You can also rent a fully-furnished apartment for a short term at University Place Apartments

 

Q: I need to know some basic information about the city, where to get groceries etc...

Q: Is there a Friday prayer service on-campus?

A: There are two, refer to "Masjids" page for more information

 

Q: Do I need to bring something with me from Egypt?

A: You may want to bring the following:

    • Some medicine
    • International driver’s license
    • Immunization record, if available
    • More clothes if you or your spouse wear hijab.

Q: Do I have to apply for Alabama’s driver license?

A: Yes

Q: How much money do I need to bring from day one?

A: If you are a missions' student "Mab3ooth", $2000 is enough. In case you are a self-financed student, you should bring enough money to support you for 45-60 days before you receive your first paycheck. We suggest no less than $3000 (excluding tuitions). An Egypt-based credit card is also a great idea for both cases.

 

Q: What is the price range of used cars in Birmingham?

A: A 5-6 year old Honda will cost no less than $6000. A 5-6 year old Ford will run around $4000. Prices vary throughout the year. Gas prices are rising, the bigger the car capacity, the lower the price.

 

Q: How much is the rent of a one bedroom and a two bedroom apartment?

A: A one bedroom apartment costs anywhere from $450 to $600. A two bedroom apartment ranges from $650 - $900. Rent does not include electricity, water or gas.

 

Q: How much will my utility bills cost?

A: Utility bill ranges are as follows (prices according to the latest site update):

  • Electricity : $70 - $160
  • Internet: $30 - $45
  • Water: Sometimes included in rent (fixed rate), sometimes not.  $60 - $80
  • Gas: (not all apartments equipped with gas) $30 - $60
